24/7 EVENT IN EBENE/ROSE-HILL HELD FROM 29 TO

31 OCTOBER 2010

Since the Official Launch of the National Sensitisation Campaign to change work attitude in the context of a 24/7 in 2009, HRDC has organized a series of events with a view to sensitizing the Mauritian public of the benefits of a 24/7 Economy namely, five 24/7 Events, Caravane Scolaire and Family Night Shows.  Given that Ebene houses sectors like finance, ICT/BPO and knowledge-based sector, which operate on a 24/7 basis.  HRDC organized a fifth 24/7 event over three days in Ebene/Rose-Hill on 29th, 39th and 31st October 2010.

The main objectives of this event were as follows:

·         To transform the CyberCity area into a 24/7 economic  Zone/hub

·         To remind the Mauritian public of the benefits the Economy may derive by adopting alternative work practices

·         To promote local artists/talents and night life in line with the Government Programme 2010-2015

·         To promote 24/7 economic activities

·         To promote local retail trade and other businesses

·         To create employment opportunities in the 24/7 businesses through a 24/7 Career Fair

Businesses in the Rose-Hill region were encouraged to actively participate with creative and innovative ideas to promote their sale but also to offer discounts and other incentives for the benefits of customers.

The HRDC worked in close collaboration with various stakeholders in Ebene such as BPML, OTAM, Apollo Bramwell Hospital, MEF, University of Mauritius and other economic operators in order to bring to light the 24/7 aspect of the Ebene Region.  Visits were organized for families to organizations and the public had the opportunity to see people working on shifts schedules.

The main objective of the event was achieved, that is, to decreet the Ebene Region, a 24/7 Economic Zone with the approval of the BPML Board.

Testimonials

"The transformation of our Economy has started. More than ever before Mauritius needs high performing companies that can be confident they have the skills they need around the clock, not only to compete with the best, but to be the best.  As a result, the Mauritian work routine is changing. Many jobs are likely to require late-night or early-morning schedules in future. Therefore, I invite all the stakeholders to collaborate to establish the 24 by 7 Economy on a strong foundation while ensuring a proper work-life balance."

- Dr. the Hon. Vasant Kumar Bunwaree, Minister of Education & Human Resources
