Our overriding goal is clear: Allowing Mauritius to join the ranks of those economies operating on a 24/7 basis. In order to meet this daunting challenge, it was important that the constraints are clearly identified. Availability of an efficient night transport system and a safe environment were rated as key deterrents to the adoption of a 24/7 economic model. HRDC has also initiated actions by setting up a “sub-committee on transport issues” and a “sub-committee on security issues” which looked at the various impediments to the availability of a 24-hour public transport service in a safe and secure environment. Measures and strategies were identified in addition to the mini strategic plan previously commissioned from KPMG. The aim of this sensitisation campaign is therefore to enlist the support of all key stakeholders including relevant authorities, law and enforcement and transport-related entities. Relevant authorities and transport planners need to integrate the 24/7 concept in their planning parameters while developing relevant criteria and policies. A number of workshops and seminars are scheduled in the forthcoming months to enlist the support of these key stakeholders and to proactively encourage the setting up of strong policies and sound programmatic efforts which will ultimately lead to making the 24/7 model a reality.
